Chicago ROAR is a regional program of Crossroads Antiracism Organizing & Training. The purpose of Chicago ROAR is to dismantle systemic racism and build antiracist multicultural diversity within institutions and communities implemented primarily by training institutional transformation teams and guided by the following principles:
Chicago ROAR recognizes that racism intersects all other forms of oppression and as such to resist racism requires resistance to all other forms of social inequality and oppression.
Chicago ROAR began as a regional program of Crossroads Antiracism Organizing and Training in 2009 after several years of organizing and relationship building. For over 20 years Crossroads had been building transformation teams inside Chicago area institutions and organizations that sought to claim an antiracist identity. In its work across the country, Crossroads has discovered that it’s impossible for individual organizations or institutions to be fully transformed if the community, and ultimately society, is not also transformed. Crossroads staff worked with a small group of volunteers to create and nurture the Chicago ROAR program so that it now has committed staff and a leadership team to do the organizing and training work of Crossroads in the Chicago metropolitan area.
Chicago ROAR envisions fully inclusive, equitable and life-giving institutions that partner in dismantling White supremacy, systemic racism and all forms of oppression in a movement that builds healthy, restorative, and sustainable communities in the Chicago Metropolitan area.
Chicago ROAR organizes, builds and equips Transformation Teams that develop policies and practices promoting racial justice in order to transform the culture of the institution.
Chicago ROAR offers a variety of ways to work to dismantle systemic racism, from hourly consulting services, to introductory and in-depth workshops, to strategic planning sessions.
Using a rigorous power analysis, Chicago ROAR helps institutions examine how they perpetuate racism by identifying barriers to just and accountable multicultural diversity.
Once an institution commits to dismantling racism, Chicago ROAR assists them with building capacity and equipping leaders with skills to break down barriers and create antiracist and anti-oppressive structures.
Pivotal to this is Chicago ROAR’s unique and innovative training process that facilitates building institutional Antiracism Teams.
Antiracism Teams organize within their institutions to create strategies to break down barriers and create antiracist and anti-oppressive structures, policies and procedures. Building an internal antiracism team is recommended for institutions committed to long-term transformation with a vision 20-30 years into the future.
Chicago ROAR is very adept at tailoring its work to meet the distinct needs of each individual institution.
