About Crossroads
Forty years ago, Crossroads was born from a conviction that good intentions aren’t enough.
A group of Christian leaders came together to create a resource for historically White Christian institutions — organizations that had declared a commitment to multiculturalism but needed support in making that commitment real. From the beginning, our founders understood something essential: multiculturalism without accountability to People of Color is hollow. It allows White institutions to embrace the language of inclusion while avoiding the harder work — the honest reckoning with history, the examination of values, the transformation of culture.
Guided by the wisdom of civil rights and racial justice leaders who recognized that racial justice requires the transformation of whiteness and white institutions, Crossroads was built on a different premise. Training alone isn’t enough. Lasting change requires organizing — building the shared analysis, relationships, and power needed to disrupt inequity at its roots.
Over four decades, we have changed alongside the institutions we serve. Crossroads is now a People of Color-led organization — not just an advocate for the practices we teach, but a living laboratory where we imagine, test, and refine them ourselves. Our mission remains what it has always been: to accompany institutions as they do the difficult, necessary work of building cultures where justice and inclusion are not aspirations but lived realities. Crossroads supports these efforts in three essential ways:
Creating Shared Analysis – Through training and education, assist organizations develop shared language and analytical frameworks that support transformative dialogue about equity and justice.
Examining Systems and Structures – Support and guide institutions in understanding how their current ways of operating maintain unjust practices as well as surface the underlying assumptions that support those ways
Cultivating New Practices – We collaborate with institutions in developing ways of being and working that foster justice, equity, and inclusion
Our Vision
Having a clear “why” is crucial. It grounds and directs an institution’s actions, enabling it to stand firm against resistance to its mission. Visions open up possibilities and shape how an institution approaches its work. When Crossroads revisited its vision, we asked ourselves: What do we long for? What do we want to make possible in the world? The outcome of that conversation is the vision we tirelessly pursue today.
In recognition that a drive to dominate ultimately dehumanizes all people and objectifies the natural world, Crossroads’ antiracist vision is no less than the restoration of all creation.
