Sara Shanley is originally from Arlington, Virginia and now resides in Chicago. She is a Director of Innovative Partnerships at Urban Initiatives (UI). UI uses sport and the power of play to empower youth to develop social-emotional skills and build social capital. Sara co-founded and co-leads UI’s Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression Committee which works toward transforming UI into an anti-oppressive organization.
Before joining UI in 2016, Sara spent a year in Rwanda working with a gender equity non-profit. She also spent a couple of years in Denver, Colorado working in the sports-based youth development field.
Sara now lives in Logan Square with her wife, whose name is also Sara. Their dogs Bentley and Maggie, their cat Whizz, and many many house plants.
